Take It Easy – Natural Stress Relievers
Stress can take a toll on our everyday lives. When mismanaged, stress can lead to numerous health problems, from weight gain, fatigue and acne to depression, anxiety and heart disease. Stress can strip us of our energy and leave us feeling overworked and underappreciated.
With April being National Stress Awareness Month, it’s a good time evaluate what our stress factors are. It’s important to investigate the issues that are triggering anxious feelings. Take a moment and write down a few items in your life that are causing you to feel overwhelmed. Of course, there may be several items on your list that are out of your control. But what areas on your stress list can you change how you approach it? More than half the battle with stress is not what is causing it, but how you respond. By identifying and taking steps to improve these areas, you’ll start to notice a change in your energy levels and mental clarity.
There are also several natural ways to help reduce your stress level. Something as simple as planting a small garden or making small changes in your diet can be life-changing. Here’s our list of stress-busters.
- Improve Your Diet. What you eat largely affects the way you feel. Many foods have been linked to stress relief, including berries, almonds, avocados, salmon, asparagus and leafy greens. Foods that are loaded in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are great additions to your diet. By putting more of these stress-fighting foods on your plate, you will be eating your way to a calmer you.
- Explore Your Green Thumb. Gardening can help lower your stress levels and boost your overall mood. Creating your own garden pays off in more ways than one. Try growing some stress-relieving vegetables for a double bonus. Sit back and enjoy the serenity of nature while you watch your garden grow.
- Get Moving. To help alleviate tension and stress, participate in a physical activity every day. Whether your favorite way to break a sweat is performing yoga, going for a run or taking a nightly stroll, adding physical fitness to your daily routine will release endorphins and improve your overall well-being.
- Engage Your Senses. Give all your five senses some loving. Listen to soothing music, enjoy scented candles, read a favorite book or watch a new movie. Open yourself up to laugh, sing and sometimes even cry. Whatever you may be feeling, you should always try to embrace and acknowledge your emotions.
Learning how to relieve stress successfully will take time. Be patient and your efforts will significantly benefit your health, inner peace and happiness.
